Inventory planning for pet brands

Plan pet inventory around what is here, what is coming and what will move.

Pet brands make purchasing decisions under lead times, MOQs, product variants and shelf-life pressure. A useful plan brings those constraints into one SKU-level view before the next order is placed.

The planning position

Start with the full stock position, not a stock report alone.

An on-hand report says what is in the warehouse. It does not say what is already committed on an open PO, how quickly an SKU is selling, or whether the remaining shelf life supports another purchase.

For each SKU, review on-hand quantity, confirmed inbound quantity and ETA, recent sales velocity, supplier lead time, MOQ and expiry or shelf-life dates where relevant. This does not require an ERP replacement. The CSV or Excel exports already used by the team can be the starting point.

A practical weekly review

Sort each SKU into the decision it needs.

ORDER

Coverage will run out before a realistic replenishment can arrive. Check lead time, MOQ and whether the demand signal is reliable before committing.

HOLD

On-hand plus inbound quantity already covers the expected period. Avoid duplicating a PO simply because the on-hand number looks low.

CLEAR

Stock is moving too slowly for its remaining shelf life or is excessive against realistic demand. Investigate sell-through, allocation or a controlled clearance plan.

Pet-specific constraints

Lead times and shelf life change the cost of being wrong.

MOQs can create false comfort

A supplier MOQ may be commercially sensible per unit but still create more coverage than the SKU can absorb. Calculate the post-PO coverage, not only the order quantity.

Variants hide the decision

Size, flavour, life stage and pack format can split demand across many SKUs. Review each one before assuming a strong category total means every variant should reorder.

Expiry is part of available stock

Inventory is only useful if it can be sold within its remaining shelf life. Pair the expiry date with sales velocity instead of treating it as a separate compliance list.
