How to Evaluate Pet Food Samples Before Approving Production

Pet food sample evaluation should answer a defined product question before a business approves the next production decision. It is more useful than a general “like or dislike” reaction because it creates a record of what was reviewed, against which version, and what must happen next.

A sample is not a universal guarantee of the final production outcome. Treat it as project-specific evidence that needs to be read alongside the specification, packaging and production route.

Sample evaluation checklist

• Identify the version: record the sample date, formula direction, format, size and any stated changes from earlier versions.
• Check the product job: assess whether the texture, portion, handling and intended feeding occasion support the customer proposition in the brief.
• Review the pack context: confirm whether the sample represents the proposed pack, portion and use experience; if not, note what remains untested.
• Compare to the specification: separate what has been observed from assumptions that still need written project-specific confirmation.
• Consolidate feedback: use one owner, a dated record and clear language for required changes, preferences and open questions.
• Decide the next step: approve the version for the next review, request a defined revision, or pause while a feasibility question is resolved.

Separate observations from approvals

A positive response to appearance or handling does not automatically approve a formula, label claim, pack component or production specification. Be explicit about what the sample can support and what is still conditional. This avoids a generic “approved” becoming an unclear instruction later in the project.

Bring the right people into the review

Include the people who can judge the product against the intended customer and channel, but give them shared criteria first. Agree which feedback is essential to the proposition and which is a preference. The aim is a usable decision record, not the loudest collection of opinions.
